In our original plan - as far as you could call it a plan - we would ride up to Ranong, and then cross over to Kawthaung in Myanmar. From there, we wanted to cycle north through Myanmar. We found out however that it is normally not possible to cycle through that region in Myanmar, and that even if you are able to sneak through it's not a nice ride. So we changed the so-called plan, and decided to ride further north via Thailand. All good. So today, rather than entering Myanmar, we continued in Thailand. But: we did see Myanmar at least, although it was on the other side of the river...

About 10km outside of Ranong, the road climbs for quite a while, which was a bit challenging yet pleasant cycling. The picture is at the top, ready for the downhill fun. |
A stop at a waterfall, but instead of the waterfall you get proof of the very nice weather |
Maybe not the most exciting picture... this is the first glimpse of Myanmar though. |
Other than that, it was maybe not our best day so far, although looking back at it, it was not that bad at all. It was raining (still!), there was quite a lot of traffic today (apparently the usual route to Ranong is blocked because of floods, to there is more traffic than usual) including noisy lorries and buses, we had headwind (sometimes strong), it was hilly, the shoulder of the road which had been good riding in the last days, was now often full of gravel, there were some very muddy construction sites, ... hahaha, just playing a bit negative, we were still enjoying it although maybe a bit less for a change. And whenever you see the beautiful scenery, or just someone smiling and yelling hello, it's all really fine again.

Building a wat (Buddhist temple) with bamboo scaffolding |
Almost at the destination, another good climb with really muddy construction towards the top |
Another view on Myanmar across the river, this time a bit closer |
So here we are, part 1 of the crossing to the east coast done, tomorrow part 2 to Chumphon. The weather forecast? Rain of course!
